Ann Carol Crispin served as Eastern Regional Director, and then Vice President, of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. With Victoria Strauss, she founded “Writer Beware” an “ombudsman” of SFWA, which warns budding writers regarding the dangers of swindling agents, editors, and publishers. Founded in 1998, “Writer Beware” has assisted civil authorities and law enforcement in disbanding writing cons and many writers rely on them today. Strauss, in announcing Crispin’s passing, stated the “Writer Beware” organization will be keeping its doors open to aid aspiring authors, because “Ann would have wanted it that way.”
